Managing Anxiety and Substance Use Disorder While Running A Business

Executives and CEOs face unique challenges in managing mental illness and addiction, as their entire company’s success relies on their time, effort, and dedication. Treatment for either typically requires a considerable amount of time in a residential treatment program, with even outpatient programs requiring several hours of the day – time which many executives simply cannot afford to lose. For many with anxiety, substances are used as a coping mechanism to deal with undesirable symptoms such as racing thoughts, muscle tension, headaches, and more. If you’ve been attempting to manage both a mental illness such as anxiety and a substance use disorder (SUD) while maintaining your business’s success, you’re not alone.

According to a 2015 publication titled, “Are Entrepreneurs ‘Touched with Fire’?”, entrepreneurs not only create new jobs and reel in economies that were in a recession, but they also create new products and services, creating prosperity. Despite these major strengths, entrepreneurs may be more vulnerable to mental illnesses due to increasing stress and pressure place on their ability to succeed. A study was conducted that involved 242 entrepreneurs and 93 comparison participants who were asked to complete surveys related to their engagement in entrepreneurship, as well as their individual and family mental health history. Researchers found the following:

  • Of the group of entrepreneurs, 72% self-reported mental health concerns, with significantly more symptoms present than their comparison group.
  • Entrepreneurs were consistently more likely to report a lifetime history of depression, ADHD, substance use conditions, and bipolar disorder than their comparison group.
  • Both groups reported symptoms of anxiety with no significant differences.

Thankfully, more treatment centers are readily available to business executives as CEOs, which offer unique amenities dedicated to the needs of these professionals, such as: business centers with computer access, ultimate comfort for healing and relaxation, healthy meals catered to the room for optimal service, and more. These types of residential treatment centers are available to those who need the time, space, and comfort to conduct business while also ensuring their physical and mental health.

If you haven’t already, speak with a professional from a reputable treatment center to learn more about programs to best suit your needs. Optimal recovery is possible, and you are not alone in your pursuit for happiness, health, and wellbeing.
