In What Ways Can Meditation Benefit CEOs?

CEOs and senior executives experience immense amounts of stress and pressure as they navigate business decisions, and more. For executives, elevated levels of stress can equate to lack of sleep, reduced physical health, reduced mental health, and ultimately, reduced well-being if not treated appropriately. Meditation is a holistic activity that can greatly help a person focus more on the present moment, something that can be particularly difficult for executives to do as they have persistent demands. According to a 2015 Harvard Business Review, CEOs and corporate teams are using meditation as a way to build leadership skills and achieve business goals. Meditation has many benefits for leaders, including: 1) builds resilience, 2) boosts emotional intelligence, 3) enhances creativity, 4) improves your relationships, and 5) helps you focus.

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NIH) estimates that 8% of U.S. adults – 18 million people – use meditation. Meditation is an ancient practice derived from China and India, and has been used for centuries to help individuals find peace, happiness, and ultimately, enlightenment. Essentially mindfulness and meditation helps people to find solace through focusing on their own breath or an object, or by focusing on a mantra. It takes practice, but meditation can truly help the brain reconnect for optimal functioning and well-being.

A 2017 study published in the journal Business Perspectives and Research sought to explore the psychological and physiological effects of meditation on well-being and reduced stress levels. A total of 22 executives participated in a 16-week mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) program, and researchers assessed participants on measures such as self-compassion, sleep and behavioral indicators, emotional indicators, and personal habits. Results from the study found that MBSR had not only a positive impact on a number of stress indicators (physical, sleep, behavioral, emotional, etc.), but self-compassion also helped reduce blood pressure and blood cortisol levels.

Chirag Patel, CEO of Amneal Pharmaceuticals has stated that he feels more connected with his clients since he’s begun practicing meditation. As stated on the Harvard Business Review,

“In a business you start connecting to your customer as your family rather than merely a business transaction.”

Overall, meditation can help CEOs boost their mood, increase their sense of connection with others, encourage divergent thinking, assist in regulating emotions, and provide an overall sense of calmness. If you are currently experiencing symptoms of a mental illness, speak with a professional from a reputable treatment center today to learn more about programs to best suit your needs. Meditation can typically be added to treatment programs, as it is a type of holistic therapy. Recovery is possible.
